When switching insurance companies from different states what do I need to bring with me when I meet with the new insurance partner?

Insurance company guidelines may differ but in general the information you need to provide to an insurance carrier in able to apply for insurance are the same no matter what state you are in. Typically this includes the following items:

Driver's License Numbers for all drivers Social Security Numbers for all drivers (if applicable) Credit card/checking account information

You will also need to have answers to questions in these categories:

General questions Drivers/Household Residents Violations or Incidents Coverage Selection Account Setup

You of course will also need to provide your new address in your new state of residence. Since you have just moved to a new state your new insurance company will look both at your current driving record and previous state's driving record to get a better picture of what type of risk you are as a driver.

You should be able to obtain insurance in your new state without providing proof of residency. It is likely that you will have to provide evidence that you have registered your vehicle in that state as well as obtain a driver's license in that state if not at when you first buy your policy but within a short period of time.

Most all states have laws in place that require new residents to register and title their car there and also for the owner to obtain a driver's license in the new state within a certain amount of time, typically 30 to 60 days. You can get insurance before you change over your registration and license typically but will want to then show your insurance company proof that you made these changes once they are done.

When moving be sure to keep your old state's insurance on your vehicle until you get your new insurance and change over your registration to your new state as well. If you cancel your old state's insurance before registering in your new state then your previous state may try to penalize you for what they see as a lapse in car insurance during your registration period when them. Also many states require you to surrender (mail back in) your old plates to their Department of Motor Vehicles when you obtain new registration in your new state.

If you are moving soon you should inform your current car insurance provider to find out how long they will continue your coverage in your new state so that you can obtain new coverage in your new state before that old policy's end date.
